Step 3: Start with a Salutation

Begin your cover letter by greeting the hiring manager. It’s best practice to address them by their name, showing you’re thoughtful and serious about the role. Finding the name of the hiring manager may not always be easy, but a good look at the job description, the company website, or LinkedIn should yield the desired result.

In case you’ve gone searching high and low for your hiring manager’s name and have come up empty, you can go ahead with “Dear Hiring Manager” as an alternative.

Most importantly, steer clear of vague and overly formal salutations such “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam”. The tone these create is a bit pompous, and not helpful when trying to build a connection with the person responsible for your hiring.
